Google Is Naming Its Price. Publishers Should Be Building Their Alternative

By Chris Hart, GM True Anthem at JWX

Google is pitching publishers a new deal. According to reporting in multiple sources, including AdWeek and The New York Post, Google is offering a pilot program that would promote publisher content inside AI Overviews, the AI-generated summaries that now sit at the top of search results. The pitch is framed as a way to offset the referral traffic those same summaries have taken away.

There is a condition. Publishers who refuse to let Google's AI models train on their content will be cut out of the program. Access to the placement requires access to the archive.

The choice publishers are being handed

Strip away the partnership language and the trade is stark. Publishers are being asked to hand over a permanent asset, their content as training data, in exchange for a benefit Google has not quantified. Google has not published publisher-level referral data from AI Overviews. Publishers cannot see what the placement is worth before they price it.

That leaves two uncomfortable options. Opt in, and license your most valuable asset for an unverified return. Opt out, and watch your visibility shrink on a surface that already answers most queries without a click. Neither path restores what publishers actually lost, which is a reliable, scaled source of referral traffic they do not have to negotiate for.

We believe the real lesson is not about this deal. It is about dependency. When a single gatekeeper controls the majority of your referral traffic, every term change becomes a crisis. The publishers in the strongest position over the next several years will be the ones who built referral capacity that no one can renegotiate out from under them.

Social is the referral channel publishers can still operate

Social platforms are where audiences already spend their time, and link posts (actually, photo posts with link in the first comment) on social still do the thing search used to do: send readers back to publisher sites, where publishers monetize the traffic on their own terms, with their own ad stack, at their own margins.

The problem is not the opportunity. It is the operational reality of capturing it.

Running social distribution at publisher scale means feeding five to ten active channels, across multiple brands, with hundreds of posts per day. It means knowing which article is gaining momentum right now, not in tomorrow's analytics review. High-performing articles have a viral traffic window of roughly 70 hours. Most teams, posting manually or on fixed schedules, watch that window close before anyone acts. And most audience development teams are being asked to do all of this with fewer people than they had two years ago.

Generic scheduling tools do not solve this. They post at fixed times with no signal behind what to prioritize. Volume without intelligence just produces more posts, not more traffic.

What True Anthem by JWX does about it

True Anthem, now part of JWX, was built for exactly this job. Its AI reads real-time signals from a publisher's own site and from social platforms simultaneously, identifies the articles gaining momentum, and distributes them at the moment they are most likely to perform. It tells your team what to post, when to post it, and handles the posting automatically.

Editorial stays in control. Teams can approve, edit, or override any post, and set content rules by category and keyword. The AI handles the default workflow; humans handle the exceptions.

The results are measurable. Publishers running True Anthem have seen social traffic increases ranging from 20% to over 200%. The platform automates more than one million posts and over 200,000 hours of manual work every month for enterprise publishers including Bloomberg, USA Today Co, and People Inc. That is referral traffic flowing to owned properties, monetized by the publisher, with no gatekeeper setting terms.

Video: a different job, done in the same workflow

Articles drive referral traffic. Video plays a different role, and it's worth being precise about the distinction. Video posted to social platforms lives natively there. On Facebook and YouTube, that opens direct monetization through established platform programs, and many publishers are driving mid-six figures in monthly revenue on Facebook alone. That's the real contrast with Google Search, which is still promising monetization at some future point through AI Overviews, but with no numbers attached. Meanwhile, Facebook and YouTube are already paying publishers today. On TikTok, Instagram, and other surfaces, the value is different: reach, brand presence, and audience relationships in the places where discovery now happens.

True Anthem supports both motions in one workflow: link posts that send traffic home, and native video that builds monetizable presence where your audience already is.

Google will keep adjusting its terms. Publishers who build their own distribution engine will not have to keep accepting them.
